Art objects and artifacts are linked to power. They have always been used to maintain or elevate positions in hierarchy. Opulent displays of wealth, potent (or impotent) imagery, reputation / history of the work or artist, and indoctrinated knowledge about art have been used by the likes of the Roman Catholic Church, Napoleon, and Altria. Iconoclasm and censorship are ever present.
But art is not simply a tool of power; it has the ability to touch the emotions, and to stimulate thought.
